Yes, you can get married at MGM National Harbor, and it makes a very good party. A wedding here means a modern ballroom over the Potomac, a glass Conservatory for your photos and a full resort for your guests. We love it because the building already runs on the same thing we do: a big night.

Search for this venue and you will mostly find show listings and restaurant pages. That is a shame, because few couples realize how large its ballroom is. So here is the guide we wish existed, written by people who think about sound, lights and how a crowd moves.

About MGM National Harbor

MGM National Harbor opened in December 2016 at 101 MGM National Avenue in Oxon Hill, Maryland, on the Potomac River's Maryland shore just outside Washington. It is a resort with a casino, a 3,000-seat theater, a 27,000-square-foot spa, restaurants and 308 guest rooms. It is now part of the MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy, which is why you will find its event details on Marriott's site.

Events happen in the resort's conference center. The event space runs to 13 rooms and nearly 50,000 square feet, and the hotel says it specializes in groups of 10 to 500, though its largest room goes much higher. Marriott Certified Wedding Planners are available, and the hotel states that they are trained to coordinate weddings of all types, including ethnic and military weddings. You can start with the resort's official site.

6 reasons we love a party at MGM National Harbor

1. The MGM Grand Ballroom has room for the whole family

At 16,137 square feet, with a banquet capacity of 1,800, this room is large enough for guest lists that outgrow most hotel ballrooms. Salons A, B and C give it flexibility, with Salon A at 7,227 square feet for a banquet of 500 and Salons B and C at 3,577 square feet and 250 each. For us that means the room can be sized to the night, so a 400-guest reception does not feel empty and a 1,200-guest one still has a real dance floor.

2. Daylight in the ballroom, then darkness when you want it

The ballroom has floor-to-ceiling windows facing the Potomac. That is a rare gift for a daytime event and a thing to plan around at night. Uplighting and dance floor effects only read once the room is dark, so we time the reveal to sunset, and we ask early how the windows can be covered if you want an all-out club feel from the first song.

3. A terrace off the ballroom for the first hour

Press coverage from the resort's opening described a 6,000-square-foot terrace off the ballroom with views of the Potomac, and the hotel still promotes its terrace views for weddings. A terrace next to the dance floor is a useful tool. Guests step out, cool off and come back, which keeps the energy in the room from burning out by ten o'clock. Ask about sound rules outside.

4. The Conservatory for your photos

The two-story glass Conservatory sits at the center of the resort, and its enormous floral displays change with the seasons. The ballroom foyers look over it. Your cocktail hour gets a backdrop that nobody had to rent, and it looks different in April than it does in December, which makes a nice reason to pick your date with a display in mind. It is a public space, so ask the venue what is possible for portraits and when it is quiet.

5. Rooms with names you already know

The smaller spaces are named for sister resorts: the Bellagio Ballroom at 4,284 square feet with a banquet of 305, and ARIA, Beau Rivage and Mandalay Bay at 1,836 square feet with 124 each. Those sizes suit a mehndi, the henna evening, a rehearsal dinner or a welcome party. Holding the small events in the same hall as the reception keeps your vendors, your décor crew and your elderly relatives from having to travel between sites.

6. The party can keep going after we stop

Every wedding has a crowd that does not want the night to end. Here they have a casino, restaurants and lounges under the same roof, and a room upstairs. That takes pressure off the final song. We can finish the reception on a high and let the after-party take care of itself. Parents and older guests get a spa and a theater to fill the next day.

How a casino resort changes the night

A resort with a casino, a theater and a row of restaurants is already in a going-out mood, and your guests will arrive dressed up to a building that is busy at night. That suits a reception. A crowd in that frame of mind does not need a long, slow warm-up, so we would plan a stronger opening set here and invite people onto the dance floor earlier in the evening. Opening coverage also mentioned a video wall that could show a personal welcome message, so ask whether that is still offered. It would be a nice first touch for your guests.

Planning your wedding at MGM National Harbor

A resort this size can hold a multi-day Indian or fusion wedding under one roof. One way it could flow, subject to the hotel's rules:

  • Welcome night: a mehndi or dinner in ARIA, Beau Rivage or Mandalay Bay.
  • Sangeet: the evening of music and dance before the wedding, in the Bellagio Ballroom or a salon.
  • Ceremony: a mandap, the ceremony canopy, set in one salon, while another is set for dinner.
  • Reception: cocktails in a foyer overlooking the Conservatory, then the Grand Ballroom.

Opening coverage also described Potomac Plaza, with a fountain and reflecting pool, as an event space for receptions. Ask whether it is available for weddings today. Questions we would bring to the planners:

  • Which outdoor spaces can host a ceremony now, and what is the weather plan?
  • Where can a baraat, the groom's dancing procession, take place? Are a horse and dhol drum allowed on the route, and is fire allowed for a ceremony?
  • How do guests under 21 get from the hotel to the event rooms?
  • Can an outside caterer bring an Indian menu, or does the resort's culinary team handle it?
  • What are the load-in hours and the end time for music?

What Planet DJ brings to the ballroom

A room this big needs a plan, not just a playlist. We scale our DJ and sound setup to the salons you book, and our lighting team can wash a modern ballroom in color and put your names on the floor. For an Indian wedding we add dhol and mobile sound for the baraat, and our MCs and party motivators keep a large crowd together from the grand entrance on. We handle corporate events at this scale too.

Frequently asked questions

Can you have a wedding at MGM National Harbor?

Yes. The hotel confirms that it provides wedding services, with more than 50,000 square feet of event space, private dining rooms and terrace views. Marriott Certified Wedding Planners can help with the vision, budget, menus and details. Contact the events team for current packages, since the hotel does not publish full wedding details on its event page.

How big is the largest ballroom at MGM National Harbor?

The MGM Grand Ballroom measures 16,137 square feet and is listed for up to 1,800 guests at a banquet and 1,600 in a theater setup. It divides into Salons A, B and C. Your real capacity will be lower once you add a dance floor, a stage and a mandap, so ask for a floor plan.

Does MGM National Harbor host Indian weddings?

The hotel states that its Marriott Certified Wedding Planners are trained to coordinate weddings of all types, including ethnic and military weddings. Before you book, ask specifically about mandap setup, baraat routes, fire rules for the ceremony and catering, because those details vary by venue and need written confirmation from the events team.

Is there hotel space for wedding guests at MGM National Harbor?

The resort has 308 guest rooms, which is smaller than the size of its largest ballroom might suggest. A very large wedding may need more rooms than the hotel can block. Other National Harbor hotels are nearby, so plan your room block early and ask about shuttles for guests who stay elsewhere.
