Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Weddings: 7 Reasons We Love This Resort

A wedding at Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay is a whole weekend on the Choptank River, with your guests sleeping steps from the party. We love it because one resort holds a ceremony over the water, a riverside dinner and a ballroom big enough for a very serious dance floor, and nobody needs a shuttle.

Most pages about this resort show you a sunset and stop there. We work in the entertainment side of weddings, so we look at it differently: where the sound goes, how long the walk is, what happens when the wind picks up. Here is what we see.

About Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay

The full name is Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Spa and Marina, and every word of it is doing work. It is a 342-acre AAA Four Diamond resort at 100 Heron Boulevard in Cambridge, on Maryland's Eastern Shore, where Route 50 meets the Choptank. The property includes the 18-hole River Marsh Golf Course designed by Keith Foster, a 150-slip marina that Hyatt places 11 nautical miles inside the river, and Sago Spa.

The resort counts 122,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space, and 85,000 of that is outdoors. That ratio is the first thing to understand. This is a place built around being outside, with a serious ballroom held in reserve. The two ballrooms were renovated in 2023, and the smaller meeting rooms followed. Hyatt publishes its wedding spaces and capacities if you want the full list.

7 reasons we love working at Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay

1. A ceremony pavilion that sits out on the water

Breakwater Pavilion stands several hundred feet offshore, reached by a paved footpath, and faces the sunset. It holds up to 150 guests. For us that walk is the event. A long approach gives a processional real time to build, so we plan the music around the distance rather than a few bars down an aisle. We would also bring a sound plan for open water, where there are no walls to help you and the breeze has opinions.

2. A lawn that can take the whole guest list

Manor Lawn hosts ceremonies for up to 500 guests, next to the 18th hole of River Marsh with the Choptank beyond it. Big South Asian guest lists often rule out waterfront ceremony sites. This one does not. A crowd that size needs speakers placed so the back rows hear the vows, and that is simple to plan on an open lawn.

3. An open-air reception pavilion with a fireplace

Regatta Pavilion looks over the river, has a wood-burning fireplace, and sits close to parking. It seats a banquet of 250 or a reception of 350. An open-air room with a roof is a lovely thing to light after dark, because the color has a ceiling to land on and the river goes black behind it.

4. A patio and a top-floor room for the quieter moments

The brick Grand Fireplace Patio overlooks the Crescent Pool and the river, with room for a 100-guest ceremony. The Lantern Room, on the top floor, holds 75 and has a private verandah. Not every event in a wedding weekend wants a sound system. Small moments here can run on a single speaker or a live musician.

5. A foyer that can be its own party

Outside the ballrooms is a 6,000-square-foot foyer with floor-to-ceiling windows and access to a patio, and Hyatt lists it for receptions of 500. That gives you a true cocktail hour room that is not the dinner room. It also means the ballroom doors can stay closed while we finish the room, so the reveal is a reveal.

6. A ballroom with real dance floor math

The Chesapeake Ballroom covers 11,259 square feet, holds a banquet of 850 or a reception of 1,300, and divides into seven sections. A 300-guest sangeet, the evening of music and dance before the wedding, should not feel lost in a room that size. We would use the sections to shrink it, then light the edges so the room feels full.

7. Guests who stay on the property all weekend

Rooms here come with a balconette or a full balcony, and families get a golf course, spa, indoor pool in the Wintergarden atrium and Camp Hyatt for kids. Michener's Library, named for the author of Chesapeake, has fireplaces and a two-story glass wall over the golf course and the river. When nobody has to drive home, the last dance is actually full. One of our couples said this about their night here:

"From the start of the baraat, to the end of the reception, they were amazing!"

Planning a multi-day wedding at the resort

Our featured events include Vinnie and Rohit's two-day celebration here, and the resort suits that shape well. Here is one way a South Asian weekend could flow. Every step depends on the resort's rules and your contract, so treat it as a starting point.

  • First evening: mehndi, the henna gathering, on a patio or in Windjammer, which has hardwood floors, a fireplace and an adjoining terrace for up to 80 at a reception.
  • Second evening: sangeet in the Choptank Ballroom, which takes a banquet of 300 and divides into three rooms.
  • Wedding day: a baraat, the groom's dancing procession, into a ceremony on Manor Lawn, then cocktails in the foyer and the reception in the Chesapeake Ballroom.
  • Morning after: a send-off brunch, which Hyatt lists among its post-wedding events.

Before you sign, ask the wedding specialists these questions:

  • Where may a baraat start and end, and are a horse and a dhol drum allowed on that route?
  • What is the rain plan for each outdoor site, and when does that call get made?
  • Are there sound or end-time limits for outdoor events?
  • What are the rules for an open flame at an outdoor ceremony?
  • How does the kitchen handle South Asian menus? The resort says it can prepare regional dishes or adapt for dietary needs, and it is worth getting specifics.

What Planet DJ brings to this resort

A resort weekend needs a team that can change shape each day. We bring DJ and sound for the outdoor ceremony and the ballroom, an MC who can move a crowd from the lawn to dinner, and lighting that answers a pavilion differently from a ballroom. For an Indian wedding we add dhol and mobile sound for the baraat, plus live musicians for the smaller moments. Hyatt notes on-site audiovisual and an adaptable dance floor too, so we coordinate early with the resort on who supplies what.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get married outdoors at Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay?

Yes. The resort lists three main outdoor ceremony options: Manor Lawn for up to 500 guests, Breakwater Pavilion for up to 150, and the Grand Fireplace Patio for up to 100. Regatta Pavilion, an open-air space on the river, is also part of the resort's wedding venues. Ask the wedding specialists how the rain plan works for each one.

How many guests can Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay hold for a wedding?

The Chesapeake Ballroom is the largest indoor space, with a banquet of 850 or a reception of 1,300. The Choptank Ballroom takes a banquet of 300 or a reception of 400. Smaller rooms such as Windjammer and the Lantern Room suit groups of 80 or fewer. A confirmed count depends on the dance floor and stage.

Does the resort help plan the wedding?

Hyatt lists experienced on-site wedding specialists who help with vendor selection, seating charts and the order of events, along with pre-wedding and post-wedding events such as rehearsal dinners, golf outings, spa days and send-off brunches. Your own entertainment team should still talk with them early, so timing, sound and setup are agreed well before the weekend.

What can you serve at a wedding on the Eastern Shore?

The resort offers a traditional Maryland crab feast, plated dinners with a choice of entrees through Hyatt's Personal Preference Dining, and menus adapted for dietary needs. Its team says it can prepare authentic regional dishes. If you are planning an Indian or fusion menu, ask for sample menus early and contact the resort directly about what is available.
