A wedding at The Atrium at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, Virginia feels like a garden party that never has to worry about the weather. Live trees, twinkle lights and an indoor stream fill a glass-walled room above 95 acres of gardens. We love it because the room does half of the decorating before anyone arrives.
About the Atrium
The Atrium is run by NOVA Parks, the Northern Virginia regional park authority, and sits inside Meadowlark Botanical Gardens. Indoors you will find live trees strewn with twinkle lights, a stream that leads to an indoor fountain, and a two-thousand square foot skylight. Three walls of glass bring in the gardens and hills beyond.
It is a different kind of venue from a hotel ballroom, and we have played it. Dave and Sonia's wedding at the Atrium in March 2014 is on our featured events list. A park venue comes with its own clear set of rules, and they are good ones, but you should know them before you plan your music. We walk through them below.
7 reasons we love working at the Atrium at Meadowlark
1. The trees are already lit
In most rooms, we have to create a mood from bare walls. Here, live trees and twinkle lights have already done it. That lets us use a lighter hand: soft color low in the room, a gentle wash over the greenery, and enough restraint that the trees still look like trees. Too much saturated color would fight the very thing you came for.
2. A stream gives cocktail hour a voice
Few reception rooms can offer the sound of moving water. The indoor stream and fountain bring a quiet layer to the room during cocktails and dinner, and we keep the background music low enough for guests to notice it. Later on, the room belongs to the dance floor.
3. Glass makes the sunset part of the show
With three walls of glass, your evening has a natural lighting change. Daylight fills the room through dinner prep, the gardens turn gold, and then the windows go dark and begin to reflect the twinkle lights. We can time the first dance or the shift into party lighting to that moment. Glass is also a hard surface, so we set speakers with care to keep the sound warm instead of sharp.
4. The skylight keeps a winter wedding bright
A two-thousand square foot skylight means a wedding in February can still feel like a day outdoors. NOVA Parks points out that events can be held here any time of year with the ambiance of the outdoors. Our own Atrium wedding on the list took place in March, which is a good reminder that a garden venue is not only a summer venue.
5. The ceremony options go well beyond a lawn
NOVA Parks lists ceremony locations inside the Atrium, on the Atrium terrace, in the Korean Bell Garden, at the Lilac Pavilion and at any of the three gazebos. Seating at the gazebos is limited to the benches already there, so they suit a very small group. The Korean Bell Garden, with its bell pavilion, is one of the most distinctive settings in the region. If it rains, outdoor plans move inside to a backup agreed in advance.

6. Yours is the only event that day
The Atrium allows one event per day, with a minimum eight-hour block that includes at least two hours of setup and one of breakdown. The curfew is 1:00 AM on Friday, Saturday and any night before a federal holiday, and 11:00 PM on other nights. That is a late finish for a garden venue. On a Saturday, you may have time to let the party run long.
7. The size keeps everyone in the same party
The Atrium seats up to 230 guests, and up to 260 with certain setups, with room for up to 300 standing. Those seated figures already allow for a dance floor, a DJ, bars, plated dinner service and gift, place card and cake tables. We like that the venue counts the DJ in its capacity. It means the number reflects a real party, and that a mid-size wedding will feel full rather than scattered.

Planning your event at the Atrium
Here are the rules from the NOVA Parks FAQ that shape your entertainment, and what they mean for you.
| The rule | What it means for your day |
|---|---|
| No amplified sound outdoors, except ceremony music | Plan the party indoors. Cocktails on the terrace would be unamplified, so consider acoustic musicians. |
| No storage before or after the event | Vendors load in and out within your rental time. |
| Dance floor, wireless microphone, podium and projection screen included | Tell us what you will use so we can bring only what you need. |
| Only votives and enclosed candles, in locations approved in advance | Ask early about any havan or flame in your ceremony. |
| Catering through Great Blue Heron Catering | Outside full-service caterers are not allowed, but pass-through service is possible with approved caterers. |
That catering rule matters for South Asian weddings. NOVA Parks says approved caterers or restaurants can deliver food while Great Blue Heron provides service, staffing and equipment for a per person fee, so a family favorite may still be possible. The venue also requires a separate beverage package through Great Blue Heron.
A baraat, the groom's dancing procession, needs a real conversation here. Amplified sound outdoors is limited to ceremony music, and this is a public botanical garden with its own rhythm, so ask about the route, a horse and an unamplified dhol, the Indian drum, before you plan one. A smaller celebration may suit the space better than a long procession. A sangeet or mehndi could work inside, but because the Atrium hosts one event a day, a multi-day wedding means separate dates. For a longer celebration, you might hold the other events at a hotel and save the Atrium for its strongest moment.
Also ask about the capacity on your date, since one NOVA Parks page says the whole Atrium seats up to 200 while the wedding pages say 230.
What Planet DJ brings to the Atrium
This room rewards a small, careful setup. We would keep sound compact and well placed, use lighting that works with the trees and add a little pattern to the dance floor when it is time to dance. For ceremonies in the gardens, we can handle sound for your officiant and processional, within the venue's ceremony music allowance. Our live musicians are also a natural fit for an unamplified terrace cocktail hour. And at a size like this, a good MC can talk to the whole room without shouting.
We have worked weddings of all kinds across the region since 1996, and a garden room with a clear set of rules is a pleasure to plan for.

If the Atrium is your room, check your date with us or call 877-737-3262. Bring your questions, and we will happily go through them with you.
Frequently asked questions
How many guests does the Atrium at Meadowlark hold?
The NOVA Parks FAQ lists a maximum of 230 seated guests, including room for a dance floor, DJ, bars, plated dinner service, and gift, place card and cake tables. It says up to 260 is possible with certain setups, and the wedding page lists 300 standing. Capacity varies with the setup, so confirm it for your layout.
Can I bring my own caterer to the Atrium at Meadowlark?
Not as a full-service caterer. All catering runs through NOVA Parks' Great Blue Heron Catering. However, a pass-through option allows approved caterers or restaurants to deliver food while Great Blue Heron provides service, staffing and equipment for a per person fee. Alcohol must also go through Great Blue Heron, under a separate beverage package.
What time does a wedding at the Atrium at Meadowlark have to end?
The curfew is 1:00 AM on Friday, Saturday and any day followed by a federal holiday, and 11:00 PM from Sunday through Thursday. Your rental must fit inside that limit and has an eight-hour minimum block, which includes at least two hours of setup and one hour of breakdown for your vendors.
Does a wedding at the Atrium include access to the gardens?
Yes. NOVA Parks says your rental includes access to the 95 acres of botanical gardens during regular operating hours, plus a one-year garden membership after the event. Ceremonies, however, are limited to the listed locations. The gardens are also a great place for portraits, so build some time for that into your day.
