A wedding at The Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C. means a true grand ballroom in the West End, with space for a very large guest list and the service the name promises. We love working here because the room can hold a big family celebration and still feel elegant, and because it divides so well for smaller events.

First, a point that trips up a lot of couples: this is not the Ritz-Carlton Georgetown. There are two Ritz-Carlton hotels in the city, and search results often mix them up. This guide covers the West End hotel at 1150 22nd Street NW. The Georgetown hotel is a separate property with a smaller event footprint, so check which one a photo or review is about.

About the hotel

The Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C. has about 300 guest rooms and sits nine blocks from the White House. The Foggy Bottom Metro station is under a third of a mile away, and the building includes an Equinox Sports Club. The hotel lists 10 event rooms and confirms that it provides wedding services. The heart of the event floor is The Ritz-Carlton Ballroom, a 10,578 square foot room with 14.5-foot ceilings and six chandeliers, and it opens onto a 4,500 square foot foyer.

8 reasons we love working at the Ritz-Carlton DC

1. You do not have to cut the guest list

The ballroom is rated for 810 at a banquet and 1,100 for a reception. For South Asian families, where a guest list can grow quickly, that takes a lot of stress out of planning. Even with a stage and a big dance floor taking some of that space, you are starting from a much higher number.

2. Six chandeliers set the tone before we do anything

A room with chandeliers already has a focal point. Low and warm, they carry a dinner on their own. Ask the hotel how far they dim, because that is what lets dance floor lighting take over later in the night. We like rooms with those two personalities built in.

3. The walls take color well

The hotel describes molded wood panels in light French grey with cream accents, along with beveled glass and silk-shaded sconces. A pale, detailed wall is a good surface for uplighting. It picks up a soft amber for a classic look or richer color for a sangeet, the music and dance night, and the moldings add texture that a flat wall would not.

4. The room divides into three salons

The ballroom splits into Salons I, II and III. Two salons cover 7,052 square feet, and a single salon covers 3,526. The hotel itself points couples to the Ballroom Salons for ceremonies and the foyer for cocktails. That means one room can do a lot: a ceremony in one salon, a reception in the other two, or a sangeet at a size that suits the night. A partition between events also means no one has to watch a flip. We plan sound separately for each side so a ceremony is never competing with a band check.

5. The foyer is a room in its own right

At 4,500 square feet and 500 for a reception, the foyer can carry a full cocktail hour. Guests stay close to the ballroom, and the doors open when dinner is ready. It gives an MC a natural moment to bring everyone in together. If you are planning a baraat, ask whether part of the procession could finish here, since winter weather can move things indoors.

6. The Plaza Ballroom handles the smaller nights

The 2,322 square foot Plaza Ballroom is charted at 160 for a banquet and 200 for a reception, though the hotel's wedding page quotes up to 70 guests for ceremonies and receptions, so ask which number applies to your setup. Either way, it is a comfortable size for a mehndi, the henna gathering, or for a rehearsal dinner. It can also divide in two. A family could keep every event at one address and never use a room that feels too big for the crowd.

7. The West End puts guests near everything

The location is the quiet advantage here. Guests can reach Georgetown, Dupont Circle and the monuments easily, and the Metro is close. For an international family visiting for a long weekend, the wedding can double as a trip to Washington. With about 300 rooms, a good share of the family can stay in the building, and a morning-after brunch is an elevator ride away.

8. The flowers can have a second life

This one surprised us. The hotel says wedding florals can be donated to local community partners. Indian and fusion weddings tend to use a lot of flowers, from mandap garlands to aisle arrangements. Knowing they can brighten someone else's day is a nice final note.

The hotel notes that capacity can change with audio-visual setup and decor, so these numbers are a ceiling, not a promise. A wedding with a stage, a mandap and a big dance floor will land well under the chart, and the hotel's wedding planners can show you what fits. Its wedding page promises custom menus across a range of cuisines, so raise your family's menu early.

Questions for your event manager:

  • Can a mandap, the canopy for a Hindu ceremony, be built up with a raised aisle or catwalk?
  • Is a ceremonial fire allowed in the ballroom?
  • Can a baraat with a dhol drum or a horse arrive at a street entrance, and which one?
  • Can outside Indian or kosher catering be used, or does the hotel cook those menus itself?
  • Where do vendors load in, and how much time do we get before guests arrive?

What Planet DJ brings to the Ritz-Carlton

We know this hotel. Sonia and Adrian's fusion wedding here in April 2016 and Deepen and Rakhi's in October 2016 were both featured by Maharani Weddings. The feature on Deepen and Rakhi's day describes a ballroom ceremony with a mandap built from chandeliers instead of pillars and a raised catwalk to the stage, which gives a sense of what this room can become.

In a room this large, sound is the first thing we plan. Distributed speakers keep toasts clear at the far tables without blasting the ones up front. An MC holds a large crowd together, and dhol and live musicians give a big room the kind of moment it deserves. For an Indian wedding, multi-event sound can stay with one team from the first salon to the last song.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ritz-Carlton Washington, D.C. the same as the Ritz-Carlton Georgetown?

No. The Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C. is at 1150 22nd Street NW in the West End and has the large ballroom described in this guide. The Ritz-Carlton Georgetown is a separate, smaller hotel. A third, The Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City, is across the river in Arlington. Confirm the address when you read reviews or ask for pricing.

How many guests can the Ritz-Carlton DC hold for a wedding?

The hotel's chart lists The Ritz-Carlton Ballroom at 810 for a banquet and 1,100 for a reception, with the Ballroom Foyer adding 500 for a reception. The hotel notes that audio-visual setup and decor can change capacity. A wedding with a large dance floor and stage will land below the chart figure, so ask for a floor plan.

Can you have an Indian wedding at the Ritz-Carlton in DC?

Yes, and Maharani Weddings has featured Indian and fusion weddings at this hotel. A ceremony with a mandap can take place in the ballroom. The details that vary are a ceremonial fire, catering, and any baraat arrival. Ask your event manager early, because those answers affect your layout, your timeline and your vendor plan.

How do you contact the Ritz-Carlton DC about a wedding?

The hotel's phone number is 202-835-0500, and its website has an event request form on the weddings and meetings pages. Have your date, guest count and any multi-day plans ready, along with whether you need a ceremony space, a cocktail space and a separate room for smaller events like a mehndi or a rehearsal dinner.
